The short answer
A van or box truck deploys the most and demands the least: any staff member drives it, it parks on a city block, and it sets up in minutes. A trailer costs less up front but needs a tow vehicle, a capable driver, and staging room, which quietly limits where and how often it deploys. A full size bus offers the most interior but brings a CDL driver, depot parking, and a purchase price that typically runs $500K to $800K and up. The right answer follows your deployment pattern, not the floor plan.
The van or box truck
- Any staff member drives it with a regular license, so deployment never waits on one person
- Parks in regular city parking and tight sites, which is where the people usually are
- Sets up in minutes: park, level, open the door
- One vehicle to insure, maintain, and store
- The trade: less floor than a bus. Two room layouts fit a box truck; a five room clinic doesn't
The towed trailer
- Lowest cost of entry, especially if a tow vehicle already exists in the fleet
- Works well parked long term at a single site, functioning as a semi permanent space
- The trades: towing takes a confident driver and a place to stage, turn, and park a combined rig. Every deployment is a two vehicle operation, setup takes longer, and the trailer can't reposition itself during the day
- In practice, trailers deploy less often than their owners planned. The friction is small on paper
and large on a Tuesday morning
The full size bus or coach
- The most interior space: multiple exam rooms, waiting areas, high volume layouts
- The trades: a CDL driver on every shift, depot or oversized parking, limited access to dense urban sites, specialist maintenance, and purchase prices typically from $500K to $800K and up
- Where it wins: high volume programs with dedicated drivers, fixed routes, and sites chosen for bus access
The question that decides it
Ask one thing: how many days per month will this actually deploy, and who makes that happen? If the answer depends on one licensed driver, one staging site, or one brave tower, the utilization math usually favors the vehicle any staff member can take out. A right sized vehicle that deploys five days a week beats a bigger one that deploys five days a month.
